Why a woven sample is the best starting point
Your yarn, tension and finishing all affect the final width. Measure a relaxed sample after the same finishing you plan for your band. Divide its warp ends by its width, then multiply that density by your target width.
Without a sample, tight WPI × 2 is a rough estimate for warp-faced plain weave. It is not the sett for balanced cloth, and it does not model tablet weaving, pickup with mixed yarn sizes or bands made with different tensions.
Example: a 40-end sample measuring 1 inch suggests 60 ends for 1.5 inches. With 8-end repeats and 4 border ends, 7 complete repeats still give 60 ends. Weave a test before committing to hardware.
